COLLISION OF TWO VESSELS - ONE SUNK - PROBABLE LOSS OF LIFE.
A telegraph from Detroit states that the schooner RACINE, bound up, collided with an
unknown vessel off Presque Isle - the vessel sunk, and the RACINE was towed into
Presque Isle, leaking badly. There are doubtless some lives lost.

The schooner RACINE is sunk at False Presque Isle, in two fathoms of water.
Her cargo is lumber and salt. Captain Robinson, of the Home Insurance Company,
has gone to her relief.

      . . . . .

The tug OSWEGO, Capt. Kimball, which left here a few days since to go to the
relief of the schr. RACINE, sunk at False Presque Isle, returned yesterday
afternoon with that vessel in tow, leaving her at Campbell & Owen's drydock,
where she undergoes the necessary repairs. After the OSWEGO's arrival at the
scene of operations, in 24 hours time the RACINE was pumped out and raised, and
in 12 hours was underway for Detroit. The RACINE's damages are more serious
than at first apprehended. Besides the loss of jibboom, bowsprit, head gear,
&c., her bows are completely stove in; knight heads, dead-wood, &c., entirely
removed. Her repairs will cost about $1,200. Her cargo of 500 bbls. salt is
entirely lost, besides which she had a quantity of lumber, saved without damage
She will necessarily have to lay up here for the winter.
