Schooner CASTALIA, no cargo, ashore at Cove Island; total loss.
      Marine Disasters of the Western
      Lakes 1871, Capt. J.W. Hall

      . . . . .

THE SCHOONER CASTALIA ASHORE - Intelligence was received in this city at a late hour yesterday, by telegram, of the loss of the schooner CASTALIA, of Detroit, in Georgian Bay, on the 3rd. inst. She sailed from this port on the 1st. inst, for Byng Inlet, to freight lumber for Clark, Wright & Co., and, which on the passage, struck on Cove Island Reef, and shortly afterward was abandoned by her crew. At the time of forwarding the dispatch, the crew were some 60 miles disatnt from the scene of the disaster. The CASTALIA, until quite recently, was a bark rigged craft, built in Sandusky in 1848 by Dipple, and was consequently 23 years old. The tug GENERAL GRANT has been chartered to go to her relief, with a complete set of wrecking apparatus. The intelligence concerning her whereabouts is, up to a late hour, very meager. There is an expectation however, that she can be got off. The Lodewyck Brothers of this city, are the owners of the CASTALIA. - Detroit Post, July 8.

SCHOONER "CASTALIA" ABANDONED. - The expedition which left Detroit a week since, on board the tug GENERAL GRANT, returned Friday evening with the outfit of the CASTALIA. As her release was about accomplished, the weather set in unfavorably, the mainmast fell, breaking in three pieces, and the whole mass was soon in a shapeless condition. All of her effects of any value were recovered, and, already stated, brought to this city. The CASTALIA was 23 years old.
