Lachine Canal - Mr. Keefer is now in this quarter, on the part of the Board of Works, for the purpose of entering into contracts for the enlargement of the Lachine Canal during the approaching winter.

If we might be permitted to offer a suggestion to parties in power, we should urge upon Mr. Keefer, the expediency of stipulating, in the contracts, the rate of wages the laborers should be entitled to receive, and limiting the number of working hours within reasonable boundaries.

All disputes between contractors and laborers originate in a difference of opinion as to what constitutes a fair remuneration. - Now we hold that the Board of Works can best decide the point; therefore, we suggest the proviso in all future contracts. - Mont. Times
