Beauharnois Commission - The following letter from the contractors upon the Beauharnois Canal, may partially account for the appointment of the commission, which has been named, to inquire into the late riots: -

Beauharnois, June 17, 1843

Sir - We, the undersigned contractors on the Beauharnois Canal, having heard that complaints have been made, of the manner in which some of us have behaved to the laborers in our employment; and having seen, in some of the public newspapers, statements made, that they were not properly paid, we have, therefore, to request that you will, as soon as possible, take such steps as you will think necessary, to have a full and public investigation, by the Board Of Works, of our conduct as contractors, from the commencement of the work to this day.
