LOTTA BERNARD, October 30, 1874, a small wooded sidewheeler that foundered off Encampment Island. She was built in 1868 and valued at $20,000. Her captain was Michael Norris and she carried a crew of 13 and 2 passengers. She foundered without her deckhouse which was previously carried away by the storm. The BERNARD's cargo consisted of a horse, 200 sacks of flour and 60 kegs of fish. Three lives were lost.

      The LOTTIE BERNARD, which was lost with several lives on Lake Superior a day or two since, was a side wheel steam barge and came originally from Sandusky and was altogether unfit for the traffic she was employed in. Her route was a rugged and dangerous one, and no other means being available for the few that traveled that way without the right of government necessary in such cases, she was permitted to receive passage permission on every opportunity.
