A large population took a standee on the bridge, as the most eligible position for comfort and sight seeing. A company of men were engaged during the day in clearing a passage through the ice above the bridge, to facilitate the escape of the huge barriers piled up in the main channel of the river, and to guard against further disaster on that account.
