The Maritime History of the Great Lakes
Rochester (Steamboat), rudder disabled &c., 14 Nov 1840

Description
Full Text

The ROCHESTER got into a fix on Saturday last. One of her tiller chains became detached while she was some distance from land, which left her unmanageable for nearly two hours during a high wind. While wallowing in the troughs of a high sea, her guards were sprung and other injuries sustained. The Buffalo Commercial say "the defect was finally remedied, and the boat put safe into Erie harbor."
