On December 2, 1859, the Bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, went ashore on North Manitou Island, Lake Michigan. She had a cargo of coal bound for Chicago.

The wrecking tug LEVIATHAN, will be sent to the North Manitou Island in an attempt to recover the Bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, which went ashore there last December.

      The stm. CITY OF CLEVELAND, Capt. Cross, passed down on Sunday, having on board 2,000 bbls. of flour and quite a number of passengers, some of whom she left at this port. By her we learn that the bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, of Erie, which went ashore at North Manitou last fall has been abandoned by Capt. Hart, of the tug LEVIATHAN, and has accordingly been dismantled.
