CHICAGO.---The schooner ELLEN WILLIAMS, Captain Oliver Swanson bound for Menoninee, light, arrived back in port Wednesday morning, in tow of the Canadian steambarge ERIN. The WILLIAMS left Chicago Tuesday at 3 p.m. and at 11:20 p.m., when about thirty two miles north half east of Chicago, she was run into by the steambarge, the schooner had her bowsprit and bowstays carried away, also some stanchions, cathead chock and hawspipe on the port side. The steambarge received considerable damage to her cabin and main and upper rail and stanchions on her port side. There was a thick fog and the wind was very light at the time of the accident, the schooner only just making headway and Captain Swanson only prevented his vessel from being struck amidships and probably sunk by putting her helm to port. The barges JESSIE SCARTH and MAGGIE were in tow of the steambarge at the time of the accident.
