LOSS OF THE SCHOONER MANSFIELD.---The schooner MANSFIELD bound from Milwaukee to oswego, with a cargo of 10,000 bushels wheat, was run down by the schooner
TELEGRAPH on Saturday last, June 30, between Milwaukee and Manitowoc island, Lake Michigan, and sunk in fifteen minutes. The MANSFIELD had been recently purchased by H.K.Vielle and Samuel Green of this city, and was a good substantial vessel, and in fine order. She will undoubtedly prove a total loss. She was insured.
We find the following additional particulars in the Milwaukee Wisconsin of the 3rd. inst.
At the time of the catastrophe, which happened about 30 miles from Manitou, there was a dense fog, so that it was impossible to see the length of the vessel. The Captain of the MANSFIELD informs us that he had just ordered his vessel brought to as the TELEGRAPH struck him amidships, cutting through the centre-board. She sunk in about ten minutes after the accident.
The cargo was owned by Harrison and Chapin, of this city, and insured in the Merchant's Mutual. The MANSFIELD left this port last week.
The Captain of the MANSFIELD does not attach blame to the TELEGRAPH, as it was
wholly impossible to see the distance of the length of the vessel ahead. This is the first disaster of the kind from this port the present season.
