A collision ocurred off Sheboygan at an early hour on Sunday morning, between the barks CITY OF PAINESVILLE, of Fairport, and GEORGE THURSTON, of St. Catharines, resulting in serious damage to both vessels. It seems that both barks were on the wind, the PAINESVILLE being on the larboard and the THURSTON on the starboard tack. The former struck the latter a terrific blow just back of the stem, on her starboard bow, crushing entirely through the outer planking breaking several frames and breast hooks of great strength, and starting her deck, besides carrying away her jibboom and bowsprit. Had she not been built immensely strong forward, there is no doubt that she would have been cut nearly through and instantly sunk. The PAINESVILLE had her bowsprit shattered, the upper portion of her stem split, and started from the hull, and was also robbed of her beautiful figure head. The injured vessels arrived here yesterday morning and will stop for repairs. The damage to the THURSTON cannot be repaired in less than two weeks, at a cost of about $3,000. Both vessels are entirely new, having come out this season. The PAINESVILLE's damages will amount to $800. This is the second collision the PAINESVILLE has had thus far in her brief career. As is usual in such cases, the captains of the vessels blame each other, and the question as to who was in the right will probably hav
to be decided in a court of chancery.---Milwaukee Sentinel.
