Kinne (Schooner), collision, 1 Oct 1842

Full Text

The schr. KINNE is in from the upper lakes, in a crippled condition, having been run into on the 1st. inst., on Lake Huron by the stm. WISCONSIN. The whole of the gunwale, stancheons and standing rigging on the starboard side of the KINNE is gone, together with her boat and davits. The collision took place upon a bright starlight night, and is considered by those on board the schooner to have been most unaccountable.

      . . . . .

Collision Between the Schr. KINNE and S.B. WISCONSIN - We have received this morning another version of the matter, alluded to in yesterday's paper. As we are now informed, the collision took place about 11:00 at night, star light in the east, but heavy black clouds in the north, the WISCONSIN was bound up, the KINNE down, before a fair wind, carrying no lights, and in consequence was not perceived until close onto the boat. The mate of the WISCONSIN who was on deck at the time, immediately ordered the helm to be put hard-a-port which was done, and the boat swung round. The KINNE did the same, instead of keeping on her course, or putting her helm hard down, either of which would have carried her clear. This management brought both vessels heading the same way, downward, and they struck. From this statement it would appear that the KINNE was as much to blame, to say the least, as the WISCONSIN. The custom the schooners have of "dowsing the glim" as soon as they get out of port, is a fruitful source of accidents.
