Full Text

Port Huron, Aug. 21. - The crew and passengers of the steam yacht GEORGE STAUBER had a narrow escape from destruction tonight when that boat was run down by the big stmr. GEORGE McDOUGAL opposite Fort Gratiot light.
The smaller boat was sent to the bottom almost immediately by the terrible impact, but the persons aboard all managed to cling to the wreckage until they were rescued by rowboats in the river.
The STAUBER was used for a ferryboat on the St. Clair River, and had a full load of passengers aboard at the time of the accident. She registers 42 tons and was owned by Capt. Dennis Kerrigan of Port Huron. She will be a total loss The McDougal is one of the big carriers belonging to the Steel Trust fleet, and at the time of the accident was bound up the river without cargo, having the barge MANDA in tow. The accident is thought to have been caused by a misunderstanding in the interchange of signals.
