White Star (Steamboat), disabled machinery, 4 Jun 1906

Description
Full Text

The little passenger stmr. WHITE STAR, running between Buffalo and Crystal Beach, became disabled when outside the breakwater yesterday afternoon and was forced to whistle for tugs. Aboard were about 300 passengers.
The accident occurred shortly after 2:30. The steamer had left her dock at the foot of Main St. and had just passed the outer light at the harbor entrance. An examination by the engineer showed that the casting on one of the pistons was broken. This disabled the engine to no little extent.
Capt. Chestnut whistled for tugs and in a few minutes the CASCADE and ALPHA of the Great Lakes Towing Co. were alongside. Several hundred pleasure seekers would be disappointed if the steamer was headed homeward, so Capt. Chestnut decided, after a talk with the tug captains, to have his boat towed to Crystal Beach. The return trip was made in the same manner, the WHITE STAR arriving at the foot of Main St. at 5:00.
The WHITE STAR waited until 7:30 last night, when she was towed back to the beach by the tug CASCADE, to return with another cargo of human freight that had been transported in the morning.
