Full Text

The stmb. HERALD, which was sunk by a collision with the prop. DUNKIRK in Lake Huron on Thursday, has had a somewhat unfortunate career since she was first commissioned. She was formerly the JENNIE BRISCOE, and was built at Detroit in 1869. During the season following she came in collision with the prop. FREE STATE, which sunk her, and her captain was drowned, all of which took place in the Detroit River. The charge which in this instance has been attributed to the DUNKIRK is altogether untimely and uncalled for. The captain of the DUNKIRK is a practical seaman of large experience, and at the time of the unfortunate occurrence his lights were buring and in good trim, and his steamer governed strictly in accordance with nautical rules.
