The schooner WEST SIDE, which ran on a rock and put a hole in her side in the Welland Canal last Tuesday, arrived in port last evening and was taken to Mills & Co's dry dock for repairs. It will be remembered that after the accident she leaked so badly that she was towed to Lake Erie and beached to keep her from sinking. Capt. John McKenna, of this city, who went to look after the vessel for the insurance companies, said this morning that the Welland Canal is in a very bad shape from the Port Colborne lock to within a distance of one or two miles north of Stonebridge. Sharp rocks project out into the water at many places with no fenders to protect vessels, and it is very hard work while going through the canal at night to keep from striking some of them.
