A dispatch from Port Rowan says that the schr. ARCTIC of St. Catharines, Ont., Capt. Sidley, loaded with Cedar posts from Providence Bay, Ont. for Buffalo, became waterlogged about 5 miles from the west end lighthouse point on Friday morning (7/10) about 10:00. The Captain dragged his anchors and manned the pumps, thinking he could ride out the gale, blowing strong from the southwest, with a heavy sea running, which continued all day Friday and yesterday. Two sailors, Robert Pigeon of Toronto and Dugaid Blue of Wiarton, Ont., while trying to reach the shore in the vessel's yawl were drowned. The yawl was found capsized yesterday at the west end lighthouse. The Captain then displayed a signal of distress, which was answered by the keeper of the lighthouse, who signalled for the lifesaving crew. They immediately left for the wreck and succeeded in rescuing the rest of the crew, consisting of the Captain, three men and two women who reached here last evening. The crew are all being well cared for by the proprietor of the Hotel Pearail. The crew of the life boat, in charge of Captain Clark and mates Bantam and Smith, are deserving of the highest praise for the efficient manner in which they handled their boat.
