Idle Hour (Propeller), U100559, collision, 16 Jul 1898

Full Text

The tug MYRTLE now lies in the Erie Basin near the Lackawana coal dock full of water. This was caused by being run into by the steamer IDLEHOUR shortly after 10:00 yesterday morning. The IDLEHOUR is in drydock as a result of the collision. Neither of the boats are greatly damaged.
The IDLEHOUR left the foot of Main Street at 10:00 on her first trip of the day down the river. She carried about 60 passengers. As she reached the Lackawana coal docks the MYRTLE came out of the Erie Basin. Both of the captains blew their whistles, but it is said there was some misunderstanding on the part of each captain.
The IDLEHOUR was steaming at a good rate of speed and the MYRTLE was light and she too, was running at a merry clip. When the MYRTLE was in the center of the river the IDLEHOUR struck her amidships. The force of the collision threw the MYRTLE to one side. Sid Parish, the Captain, Herbert Booth, the fireman an the engineer were all thrown overboard. They immediately gained their boat and were taken to shore by a scow. The IDLEHOUR was forced to stop at the Bennett Elevator and release her passengers. She was then towed to the drydock. If it had not been for the collision bulkheads of the IDLEHOUR that boat might have sunk. This it is said is the only thing that saved the boat from going down.
The MYRTLE is still in the Basin, but she will probably be raised tomorrow.
