Full Text

A despatch from Chicago last night says: The steambarge SWALLOW left Muskegon for Chicago yesterday laden with lumber. When in midlake she encountered a dense fog and narrowly escaped collision with a sail vessel by the captain putting his wheel hard a-starboard. The sudden move threw the vessel on her beam ends. At the same time a fierce squall struck her broadside and the seas rushed into her hold, putting out the fires. The vessel filled to her decks and would have gone to the bottom had she been loaded with coal or ore. Her deck load went overboard, carrying two of the crew with it. The men, however were saved. After drifting about in the heavy seas for 3 or 4 hours the disabled vessel was picked up and towed to this port, reaching here tonight She now has sunk at the entrance to the harbor.

      . . . . .

The wreck of the steambarge SWALLOW at Chicago, which was occasioned by overloading, has drawn attention at Chicago to the general subject of loading a vessel beyond her capacity, and a movement to have some regulations made to prevent the practice is on foot.
