City of Dresden (Propeller), collision, 15 Oct 1873

Full Text

Between 7 and 8:00 Monday evening as the prop. CITY OF DRESDEN was crossing to the canada side, the stmb. JENNESS came down the river at full speed, and mistaking the position of the propeller struck her head on a little abaft of midship. The shock keeled the propeller over to starboard on her beam ends, and the barge went tearing along her port side for 30 or 40 ft. , crushing deck beams, smashing planks and completely tearing off the bulwarks for 30 ft. Both vessels were at once stopped, and it was at first thought that both were in a sinking condition. An investigation was made and it was found that neither was leaking, and the propeller went to her dock and the JENNESS went down the river after her barges. The injury to the propeller shows with what speed the barge was going. Some of the planks were splintered almost as fine as matches, and big beams were snapped in 2 and iron rods twisted in a manner to make the beholder wonder. A fender hanging from her side was struck in such a way so to tear it loose, throw the end out, and it passed through the side of the barge into the forecastle, ripping out a bunk or 2 being so firmly wedged that it was sawed off at the end and left in the hole. Three or 4 of the crew were sleeping in the forecastle, and they were lifted up and tumbled around rather roughly, though none were hurt beyond a few bruises. On board the propeller everyone standing was knocked down, and the furniture was badly mixed up.
