Mackinaw City, Mich., Dec. 6. - The steamer WALDO A. AVERY, with 70,000 bushels of corn from Chicago to Buffalo, was totally destroyed by fire last night in the Straits. She was beached at Gulpin's Point. The boat was owned by Haygood & Avery of Bay City and valued at $80,000.

The steamer WALDO A. AVERY which burned in the Straits in 1893 has been widened 18 inches and will return to service under a new name.

The case of the AUSTRALASIA is precisely the same as that of the steamer WALDO A. AVERY, which burned in the Straits very late in the season several years ago. In that instance a representative of the underwriters purchased the wreck and had it rebuilt at West Bay City. The AVERY is now known as the PHENIX.
