PLAN TO DRAIN CANAL TO RAISE SUNKEN BOATS.
Lockport, June 19. - Canal Supt. Frank Wilson announced today the water in the Erie Canal locks here will be drawn off Saturday afternoon and remain off several days to permit two sunken boats, the OSWEGO and the RYAN in the bed of the stream near the Sulphur Springs guard lock five miles west of Lockport, to be raised.
The OSWEGO, owned by Capt. Ott of Buffalo, sank early in the season with 210 tons of pig iron, while the RYAN, which went down a week ago, was empty. The RYAN is owned by Thomas Ryan of Buffalo.

      RAISING CANALERS OSWEGO AND RYAN.
Start Work On Sunken Boats Near Lockport - Water Drawn.
Lockport, June 25. - With the water drawn from the upper level of the Erie Canal between this city and the Pendleton guard lock, the work of raising the two boats, "OSWEGO" and "RYAN," which sank recently in the stream five miles west of Lockport, was in progress today. The OSWEGO contains 210 tons of pig iron consigned to an eastern munitions plant, it is claimed. It sprang a leak, and sank near Pendleton.
The fact that the material is wanted for war purposes is understood to be the reason for raising the boat which contained it. The RYAN was empty when it went to the bottom. Capt. Ott of Buffalo is the owner of the OSWEGO and Thomas Ryan of Buffalo, owns the RYAN. It is anticipated today that the two boats would by raised by tomorrow morning and that the water may be sent back to the canal again, and navigation, temporarily suspended between Lockport and Pendleton, resumed.
