The Canadian steamer CUMBERLAND is on a reef not down on the charts, eight miles from the Southwest end of Isle Royale, Lake Superior, in a manner which will involve a great deal of trouble to get her off.
August 1, 1877
It is feared that the steamer CUMBERLAND, ashore on Isle Royale reef, will be worth but little after being gotten off; if she does not prove a total loss before it is possible to perform the operation.

Now they say that the CUMBERLAND, on Isle Royale reef, has parted, and that no part of her can be saved.
August 10, 1877
It is shown that the reef upon which the CUMBERLAND was lost, near Isle Royale, is plainly marked in the official charts of the United States. If the commander of the vessel had in use a chart upon which it was not marked he is partially relieved of the responsibility for the misfortune.
August 16, 1877
The CUMBERLAND is a total wreck. It having been found impossible to get her off the shoal upon which she struck. The officers and crew came down by the FRANCES SMITH having abandoned their boat. Nearly everything movable was taken off before she was abandoned. It is understood that she is full insured. The reef on which she struck is not shown on ant Canadian chart.
