The storm which commenced on Friday, increased to a gale on
Saturday and the water ran high in the Lake. Had the wind been a
few points more toward the northward, much damage probably would
have been done to the docks and depot, but as it was, no serious
damage resulted.
The barque DANUBE of Oswego, bound for Chicago for grain,
endeavored to enter the river about 2:00, but in consequence of
having no canvas set except the peak of the jib, she ran by, and
was carried upon the beach west of the pier. She let go her
anchor and swung clear, drawing about 4 ft. of water. During the
night she swung round so that yesterday she lay with her head up
the lake. The sea had gone down, so that she was not damaged.
She probably got off last night.
About 11:00 Saturday night the schr. GEORGE DAVIS of Buffalo,
attempted to enter the river, but loosing steerage way, she was
carried over to the west pier where the heavy seas lifted her up,
and carried her over the outside row of spiles and set her down
between spiles so that she could not extricate herself. In
coming in she struck the west pier and stove in her starboard
side. She was in a dangerous position and thumped heavily upon
the spiles through the night, damaging her severely. Yesterday
morning the sea having gone down somewhat, efforts were made to
get her off. The U.S. stm. MICHIGAN sent men to assist, and
after several hours of ineffectual labor, the tugs D.P. RHODES
and PETER SMITH made fast to her and endeavored to haul her off,
but scarecly any progress was made. She was fast upon the spiles
and the sea going down.
The GEORGE DAVIS is owned by Capt. Reuben Becker of the
WESTSIDE. She lays in a dangerous position and it is probable
she will have to be raised.
