Full Text

The new schr. NIMROD collided yesterday morning with the new schr. MICHIGAN, off Port Stanley and sunk in 80 ft. of water. She had on 37,000 bu. corn, consigned to Bruce & Chambers and March & Sternberg. The NIMROD was valued at $40,000, and owned by Milan parties. She was insured for $20,000. The cargo was fully insured. The MICHIGAN was not injured. The crew of the NIMROD went ashore in a small boat and were taken to Port Colborne by the bark GRANTHAM. The captain reports that the MICHIGAN never stopped to see if any help was wanted.

      . . . . .

It appears that the schrs. MICHIGAN and NIMROD, in their late collision on Lake Erie, did not see each other until they were only about 40 rods apart. It was early morning, dark and smoky at the time, and the wonder is that the collision was not more serious than it was. The NIMROD was struck a glancing blow, which the captain of the MICHIGAN, supposing to be no greater than he sustained, passed on. It is doubtful if he could have found the NIMROD had he tried, for the vessels were almost immediately out of sight of each the smoke and darkness. From the time of sigthing the NIMROD until the collision was little more than 15 seconds. The story of the MICHIGAN having encounters with the LUCKEY and another schooner is believed to be a hoax, a letter from the former to her owners in this city mentioning no such occurrence. - Detroit Post
