A RECKONING The series of gales that swept over the lakes between the 15th and 24th of November have proven unusually destructive to vessel property and life. There has probably been no parallel in the annals of lake navigation, not even excepting the destructive gale of 1870. Within the dates named, no less than 65 vessels are known to have met with disaster, exclusive of the loss of a valuable dredge, two derricks and ten scows of a plant returning to Buffalo from the Lachine canal. With one or two exceptions all the mishaps are directly attributable to heavy weather. The amount of tonnage jeopardized aggregates to 16,000 tons in round numbers, with a valuation of about $450,000, not taking cargoes into consideration, which would, if added, swell the total to an enormous sum. The loss of life foots up nearly 50, including 30 who were on the steamer Waubuno, which foundered on Georgian bay.

The following is a list of all the disasters reported from the 15th to the 24th inst. Inclusive, classifies as to the lakes upon which they occurred.
