The Maritime History of the Great Lakes
Java (Propeller), U75388, fire, 1 Dec 1876

Description
Full Text

While bound up from here the prop. JAVA had a very narrow escape from being burned. One of the stoves in the cabin was tipped over by the rolling of the craft in the high running seas. The red hot contents of the stove were scattered over the cabin floor and came near setting fire to the woodwork, but men were near who scooped up the coals and saved the vessel from a serious disaster. One of the men had his hands burned terribly.
