NYANZA SUNK IN ST. MARY'S RIVER
Collided With The NORTHERN KING In A Fog And Went Down - May Be Raised.
Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. July 17. - The steamboat NYANZA collided yesterday with the NORTHERN KING in a fog at the foot of Sugar Island, in St. Mary's River.
The NYANZA sank in shoal water. The NORTHERN KING was apparently uninjured. The NYANZA was valued at $110,000, and was owned by the McBrier syndicate of Erie, Pa. The NYANZA was bound up and loaded with coal.
The lighter MONITOR, with steam-pumps and diver, during the afternoon went to the NYANZA. It is thought temporary repairs can be made so that the steamer can be raised and possibly can continue on he trip.

Interesting Description Of The Result Of The Collision Between
The NYANZA And NORTHERN KING.
The description of the repairs of the damage done to the steamer MYANZA by the NORTHERN KING is interesting.
The NORTHERN KING struck the NYANZA on the starboard side, making a large hole and bulging her out badly on the port side. The blow bent all the deck planks on the lower and upper decks, so that they had to be taken up and replaced for a distance of 140 feet. The NYANZA is diagonally strapped all over, and the deck straps and arch plates were all buckled, greatly increasing the expense of the repair work.
There were used in these repairs 80,000 feet of timber and over 30 tons of iron and steel, not including the new propeller. One hundred bales of oakum were used in recalking her inside and out. There was a pressure of 500 tons put against her port side to straighten her out.
