ACCIDENT IN THE RIVER.
Steamer Went Aground & Other Boats Crashed Into Her, Doing Considerable Damage.
In the fog yesterday morning there occurred an accident in Niagara River which resulted in the steamer NIKO being badly damaged. The steamer NEWAYGO, towing the schooners ORTON and YOUNG, bound down, struck some obstruction abreast of Germania Park. Her consorts let go the tow-line and drifted down the river and were picked up by one of the Tonawanda tugs. The steamer NIKO, towing the schooners CHURCHILL, followed the NEWAYGO tow closely down the river, and in trying to pass the NEWAYGO, which was still aground, got on the bottom herself, and her consort, the CHURCHILL, crashed into her stern about eight feet, cutting her down nearly to the water line.
The barges were in one of Maj. Ruffner's 16-foot channels when the fetched up. The NEWAYGO drew, it is said, 12 feet 7 inches of water. The NIKO drew 12 feet 10 inches. Tugs pulled the CHURCHILL out of the wrecked stern of the NIKO and she proceeded to Tonawanda. The NIKO and NEWAYGO were released shortly afterwards and with the assistance of tugs also went to Tonawanda. From what could be learned from one of the local tugmen, the NIKO is in bad shape.
