Detroit, Mich. May 28. -- The steamer MERIDA, bound up, had her engine totally wrecked when at the foot of Lake Huron last night. The engine went through itself, and little remains that can be used again. She was towed here this morning by the steamer MASABA, and repairs will be made by the Frontier Iron Works, the builder of the machinery. The MERIDA is owned by D. Whitney, Jr., of Detroit.

Engine Ran Wild Through Loss Of The Propeller Wheel.
Detroit, Mich., May 29. -- The accident to the MERIDA occurred off Sanilac. The steamer was light, and without warning the screw broke or dropped off, and the engine ran wild. A few seconds later the cylinders and connections lay a mass of twisted steel in the crand pit. So sudden was the accident there was no time for any prevention. The woodwork of the engine room is burned by the steam, and in the crash the engineer had his leg hurt.
A partial examination shows that the nut is still on the shaft, so the screw must have struck something, or else the hub split.
