Bixby (Propeller), struck breakwall, 1 Dec 1911

Full Text

After a terrific battle with the waves on Lake Erie, the package freight steamer NORTHERN QUEEN of the Mutual Transit fleet, was forced to put back into port yesterday morning. Despite the storm warnings, the vessel left port on Wednesday with a cargo of merchandise for Duluth. Ten hours after the vessel left port she had only covered a little less than 30 miles, and when opposite Mohawk Island, Captain G.B. Crawford decided to turn back. At that time waves more than 20 feet high were washing over the deck of the steamer, and everything movable was wept overboard. Just as the ship had pointed her bow back towards Buffalo one of the extra propeller blades which was lashed to the deck was torn away and swept overboard. A part of the railing, about ten feet long, was torn away and two plates on her starboard side near her stern were so badly damaged that they will have to be replaced. The vessel was on her last trip of the season. She is making repairs, and may clear port today. During the storm yesterday the steamer BIXBY rammed the breakwater and damaged her bow. The cause of the accident is not known, but it is thought someone gave the engineer the signal to go ahead and when started she struck the breakwater. Damaging several of her plates.
