Union (Ferry), fire, 16 Jun 1876

Description
Full Text

The ferry UNION burned to the water's edge at her dock below Black River, in this city last night and sank about midnight. The UNION was brought here last fall to assist in keeping the river free of ice so that cars could be crossed, but was not needed, as there was no obstruction to overcome at this point, and she has been laid up ever since. The boat keeper and his family were rescued by the men of the cutter FESSENDEN.

Captain Fred Merryman, of the Coast Wrecking Company, has purchased the Ferry UNION, which lies sunk about two miles below Port Huron. She will probably be raised, or her engine and boiler taken out, and the hull allowed to rest in its present position.
