The schr. CARLINGFORD while being towed to Tonawnada by the tug S.E. BRYANT about 8:00 yesterday was struck by a heavy squall when nearly abreast of the new breakwater and parted her hawser. Before another line could be fastened she had drifted on the Horseshoe reef at the mouth of the river. The life saving crew under the command of Capt. James H. Carroll, immediately launched the surf boat and pulled out to the vessel, taking off 6 of the crew and the femal cook. The Captain, Albert Perry, and the first mate remained on board. The vessel made water very rapidly, but was in no danger of being seriously damaged. She was loaded with lumber and had been waiting here several days for a good chance to go down the river. Her tow-line was not of the most substantial kind and Capt. Byers of the BRYANT objected to using it, but was overruled by the master of the vessel. Lighters were sent out to her this morning, but nothing could be accomplished on account of the sea.

This morning 2 lighters were towed alongside the lumber laden schr. CARLINGFORD, which went on Horseshoe reef Sunday. If the weather continues as favorable as at present the vessel will probably get off by daylight tomorrow.
