Van Straubenzie (Schooner), C75632, collision ?, 24 Aug 1878

Full Text

A collision occurred at 9 o'clock Saturday night about thirty miles from Cheboygan, between Detour and Spectacle Reef light, between the schooner GRACE MURRAY and an unknown Canadian topsail schooner. The MURRAY was standing to eastward and the other to westward, and struck the MURRAY on the quarter, tearing away her cabin. The cook was knocked overboard and drowned, and the mate badly cut about the hand. Medical assistance was obtained at Cheboygan. The MURRAY was able to proceed to Chicago, but the whareabouts of the other schooner is not known.

It has been the impression that the Canadian schooner which collided with the GRACE MURRAY was the VAN STRAUBENZIE. The latter arrived here yesterday, but the fact that she was the colliding craft is not yet established, as her master has not yet been interviewed on the subject. It must not be understood that he denies it.
The cook lost overboard at the time was Nicholas Daly, a Swede.
The Captain of the MURRAY has entered a protest here, but it contains nothing additional.
