ANOTHER OLD TIMER GONE.
Soon the old schooner WATCHFUL will be among things of the past - in fact she is almost so now. Last fall she was towed to the Michigan Stove Works dock, where during the winter she sunk. Some time ago Mr. Bostwick, the junk dealer, bought her, principally for what old iron she contains. Without raising her he began the work of dismantling, and now her jib-boom and bowsprit are gone, her spars have gone by the board, and general dilapidation prevails. The WATCHFUL was built at Clayton way back as far as 1854. At that time she was accounted a first class vessel and a large one. She has done good service, and never experienced any serious mishaps. About thirty years ago she was anchored off the mouth of the Detroit River, where she remained until the summer, when she was towed to Detroit to be repaired. Work to this end was commenced, when a seizure by the United States Marshal so discouraged her owner that she was abandoned. In 1877 she reached the lowest rating ever given to a lake vessel by the Insurance Companies, that of C 1, a rating that is not now recognized by the Underwriters. So they go.
