ADRIFT IN A NOR'EASTER
The Tug Seymour Disabled and Her Tow Tossing About the Lake - All Brought to Port.
At 11 a.m. Saturday the tug George D. Seymour, Capt. Fitzgerald, left Ogdensburg for this port with the barges Erie, Michigan, Kent, Argo, the "pin-flat" Rock City and canal boats Frankie & Bennie and Julia Halnon in tow. The Kent and Argo had lumber and the canal boats were ash-laden. Yesterday morning, when four miles off Stony Point, the Seymour's cylinder head blew out, totally disabling her. Capt. Fitzgerald went ashore in a small boat and telegraphed Mr. P. Hannan of this city to send tow tugs to his assistance. The Fred, Wheeler, Capt. C. W. Ferris, and Eliza J. Redford, Capt. John Redford, left about 5 p.m. The situation of the disabled tug and her tow was quite precarious, being in a narrow and dangerous sea way, with a gale blowing from the northeast, before which they were likely to driven ashore. The tow quickly broke up, of course. The Michigan and Erie made sail, tool the Kent in tow and made this port safely about midnight, the Redford taking the Kent outside and the others sailing in. The Argo also made sail with the Rock City, Frankie and Bennie and Julia Hanlon in tow and worked towards Oswego. The tug Wheeler, arriving at the scene, took the tug Gardner in tow, brought her here and started back after the barges, which were soon picked up by the Wheeler and the Redmond and all brought in safely about 8 a.m., which, considering the weather, was a good job. The Gardner will have to get a new cylinder head in Buffalo, and the damage by the accident is variously estimated at from $1,000 to $2,000. It will be about two weeks before the Seymour can resume business. What will be substituted for her is not yet decided.
