Capt. Thomas Cowan of the steamer SAMUEL MARSHALL, which had the barge JAMES P. SAWYER in tow when it waterlogged, arrived here yesterday. He said that the SAWYER was down 20 feet in the water forward and 18 feet aft, bringing the rails far under water. He towed the barge back to Mackinaw City, where the deckload was taken off preparatory to pumping out the water. If the SAWYER had had a cargo of grain instead of lumber, it would now have been at the bottom of Lake Michigan. --- Chicago Times.
