CARRYING PASSENGERS ON FREIGHT STEAMERS

Collector Spaulding of Chicago has been notified by the secretary of the treasury that he has remitted the fine of $500 imposed on Captain Carter for taking his wife and a few friends for a ride on the lake in a harbor tug. The supervising inspector of steam vessels recommends that notice be given to owners and masters that they cannot lawfully carry persons other than crew under any circumstances, without complying with the terms and conditions imposed on ordinary passenger vessels.
