Prince Arthur (Steamboat), collision, 19 Sep 1879
Full Text

About half-past eleven o'clock yesterday forenoon a collision occurred between the exhibition ferry steamers PRINCE ARTHUR and MAXWELL at the York Street wharf, which might have resulted in a very serious disaster and loss of life, but fortunately the damage sustained by the vessels in the collision was trifling. It seems that the MAXWELL, upon her regular trip to the Exhibition ground, called as usual at the York Street wharf, where there were a large number of persons ready to go aboard, and the PRINCE ARTHUR, belonging to the Exhibition Ferry Company, which was coming east, also made a dash to the wharf in order to get most of the passengers, instead of passing on as usual to the Young Street wharf. Being unable to slow sufficiently she crashed against the bow of the MAXWELL, on board of which was almost five hundred people, and among whom a frightful panic instantly broke out. The women and children screamed, and large numbers of men sprang upon the wharf, thus adding to the terror of those left on the boat. Fortunately, however, nobody was hurt, but the PRINCE ARTHUR received an ugly cut in the bow, while the MAXWELL stood the shock without receiving any damage. The PRINCE ARTHUR, however, continued running during the remainder of the day.
