Engineers aboard ship have often worked their engines ahead when they thought they were backing them and have persisted in the operation notwithstanding repeated signals to the contrary, just as a man at the wheel in time of excitement turns the wheel the wrong way. The second engineer of the steamer ONOKO, of the Minch fleet of Cleveland, while working up the river at Ashtabula Harbor on Sunday last, turned his throttle the wrong way and the result is shown in the accompanying picture. The new steamer DOUGLAS HOUGHTON of the Rockefeller fleet was tied up at the P.Y. & A. Ry, dock, just above the swing bridge. The ONOKO came along through the draw and did not make the turn in the river on account of the trouble referred to in the engine room. On the contrary, she ran into the HOUGHTON, and as she was loaded deep, the projecting stern of the HOUGHTON swept everything clean above the main deck from stern to pilot house. The HOUGHTON was not much damaged. The ONOKO is undergoing repairs in Cleveland.
