Tows in Trouble Off Long Point - Lake Travelers Badly Frightened.
Numerous marine accidents have undoubtedly been caused by the heavy gales of wind on the lakes the past two days. The tug JOHN OWEN, with the schooners J. B. MERRILL; J. S. RICHARDS; HATTIE A. ESTELL; NASSAU and M. J. CUMMINGS, came to grief 15 miles this side of Long Point. The tug dropped the boats and they returned yesterday. The MERRILL had her main gall carried away and her mainsail split; the RICHARDS lost her fore gaff and split her foresail; the NASSAU also had her fore sail, and from the deck of the ESTELL were washed about 200 barrels of salt, part of 401 barrels shipped to Marquette. The CUMMINGS was all right. Smith, Davis & Co. have been notified that the schooner POLLY M. ROGERS is ashore on Stave Island.
About 700 passengers bound from Cleveland to Detroit on the CITY OF CLEVELAND were badly frightened. The paddle-box bulkheads were sprung and water poured into the boat. The water rose until it was 6½ feet high in the cabins. The passengers put on life preservers and were prepared for the worst. The boat arrived at Detroit in bad shape.
