Mayflower (Scow), capsized, 2 Jun 1891

The schooner rigged scow MAYFLOWER was struck by a heavy sea about four miles off Duluth yesterday. Her deck load shifted slightly to port and she shortly after careened to port and turned bottomside up. She was in tow of the tug CORA A. SHELDON, and as soon as she listed the tug people cut the tow line and put about to effect the rescue of the crew. After extreme difficulty all were saved with the exception of the Captain, Theodore Zorbot, who sank in a few minutes.

The barge MAYFLOWER went down four miles from Duluth at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Capt. Zeerbst of Houghton was drowned but the crew of three were rescued by the tug SHELDON which had her in tow. The MAYFLOWER was loaded with stone for Duluth from Portage Entry. She was owned by Leathen and Smith of Sturgeon Bay and valued at $3,000.
