Pelican (Schooner), collision, 1 Apr 1878

Description
Full Text

When the PELICAN was on Lake Michigan, and when she and the schooner GOSHAWK were heading towards Skillagalee Light, during a dense fog, the GOSHAWK struck the PELICAN, carrying away her mizzen rigging and knocking one man overboard. It is reported that no effort was made to rescue the man, and he was drowned. --- Buffalo Advertiser.
The many friends of Captain Gould in this section will be slow to believe this story. He is known here as a kind hearted gentleman.

On the 25th Inst., near the entrance of the Straits, with the schooner PELICAN in tow of the EGYPTIAN, Samuel Morrison, first mate, fell overboard and was drowned. The two vessels, at the time of the accident, were moving at about fourteen knots an hour. The unfortunate man caught two or three lines thrown, one after another, to himbut, owing to the rapid rate at which they were moving through the water, he was drawn under and lost, all subsequent efforts to recover the body being futile. He was a resident of Ashtabula, O., twenty-eight years of age, and leaves a wife, having been married last fall. -- Buffalo Express.
The report that no effort was made to save the man is entirely unfounded.
