The Maritime History of the Great Lakes
Otter (Schooner), collision, 23 Oct 1878

Full Text

This Time Between the Schooners LENA JOHNSON and OTTER.
The schooner OTTER arrived in port yesterday in damaged condition, having had a collision about the middle of the lake on Wednesday night. The OTTER was lumber loaded, on her starboard tack, by the wind, while the JOHNSON was flying light with the wind free. The OTTER lost jibboom, bowsprit and headgear, beside other slighter injuries. To just what extent the JOHNSTON suffered is not yet known, but it is not thought that she was damaged any to speak of.
All this, of course, is the OTTER's side of the story. The master of the JOHNSON may be able to make a good defense, though at present it would seem very difficult for him to do so.

      . . . . .
The schooner LENA JOHNSON, recently in collision with the schooner OTTER, arrived back here yesterday. Her damage only ammounted to the loss of two chain plates. Her officers claim that the JOHNSON at the time of the collision, was by the wind, while the OTTER had it free, and that the OTTER was wholly to blame. The captain of the OTTER, it will be remembered, told the story just the other way. The wind was northwest, and the JOHNSON was light, and bound for the east shore, while the OTTER was loaded, and on her way here.
