Full Text

The good schooner N. W. STANDART, of Buffalo, bound from Tawas City, Mich., to her home port, with a large cargo of lumber, was caught in the terrible gale of Sunday night last. Her rudder was unshipped when off Cleveland at about 9 o'clock on the evening of October 27th. and for fifteen hours the poor vessel was tossed about in the heavy trough of the sea, a veritable plaything, for the merciless waves. her yawl boat was first swept away; then her canvas was blown to tatters and rendered worse than useless. The Captain smashed two of his fingers so badly that it is feared amputation will be necessary. Thrown about by the wind and waves, the helpless vessel began to leak, and the poor, overworked sailors were kept busy at the pumps. Yesterday morning the crippled vessel was noticed about fifteen miles from shore with a signal of distress flying at her mast head. The tug ERIE, Captain Christain, started to the rescue about 12 o'clock, and was followed by the revenue cutter PERRY. The officers of the cutter saw that the ERIE had the schooner safely in tow, and so returned to port. The STANDART lost her deck load of lumber and beside was full of water. She was towed into port about 5 o'clock. --- Erie Dispatch.
