Edward Petrie (Canal Boat), sunk, 19 Nov 1908

Full Text

Tonawanda, Nov. 19. -- Mayor William H. Follette received word this morning that the canal boat EDWARD PETRIE, owned by Jerry Petrie of New York, leased by Tonawanda's Chief Executive to carry grain from Buffalo to new York, sank early this morning in the canal, near the guard lock at Pendleton. The boat was laden with wheat. Mr. Follette had a boat sent from Buffalo to Pendleton at once to lighter the sunken boat so that it could be raised and dry-docked at Lockport. The boat is reported to have sunk as a result of striking a rock in the canal at Pendleton. The point where the accident occurred is being enlarged for the barge canal. Local canal interests claim that much damage has resulted to boats coming in contact with obstacles there since the barge canal work was started. Only a few days ago the canal boat GOLD DUST, laden with grain, struck something there that caused it to sink soon after.
