SCHOONER BIWABIK SUNK AT THE FLATS.
The barge BIWABIK, bound up, in tow of the steamer GOGEBIC, took a sheer just before she reached the end of the St. Clair Flats ship canal yesterday morning and ran hard aground. The barge is out about two feet forward and has sunk with about 12 inches of water over her stern. The BIWBIK is in a dangerous position and with the least shift of the wind will completely block the channel. As she lays now, only one boat at a time can pass her.
The accident occurred about 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The steamer GLADSTONE, which tied up last night at the foot of Hastings Street, reported that the BIWABIK was in some danger because of her position in the channel, as she might be run into by other boats. The captain of the GLADSTONE said her stern was sunk quite deeply in the water, and it is likely she will have to be lightered before she can be floated. The GOGEBIC went on up the river after the accident, and is now lying at the Star Island dock. The BIWABIK belongs to the Mills transportation Co., and was built at Marine City. She is 240 feet long, 41 feet beam and draws 17 feet of water. The wrecker MARY GROH has been sent to the BIWABIK from Port Huron.
