Goodall (Schooner), abandoned, 25 Dec 1892

Full Text

From the crew of the schooner GOODALL, of Port Huron, who drifted ashore several miles south of Bayfield Ontario, it is learned they abandoned the vessel on the evening of Wednesday the 25 ult., having been caught in a gale and a heavy sea. The vessel started leaking and was in a sinking condition. Five men and one woman, the latter wrapped in the Captain's oilcloth coat, as she escaped with hardly any clothing, took the yawl, fifteen foot long, with some provisions, which were washed overboard, leaving nothing to eat and no oars. A piece of oar and bit of sail were utilized to keep the yawl out of the trough of the sea. In this condition they drifted towards the Canadian shore, suffering from intense cold. The snow and wet freezing on them had to be knocked off with a hatchet.
On Friday morning a propeller passed within a mile. They feel sure the man on watch saw them, but offered no assistance. The heavy sea and intense cold still kept up. On Saturday they saw Goderich electric lights in the distance. On Sunday morning they saw land, a joyous sight to them, and finally reached shore about noon on Sunday, so crippled and frozen that one man was just able to crawl on his hands and knees up the bank to the nearest farm- house for assistance, which was promptly rendered, the suffering crew being brought in and medical aid procured and all done that could be done to alleviate their sufferings by the people of Bayfield and neighborhood. One man had his hands and feet dreadfully frozen, and it is feared he will lose them. The others have much recovered
