SCHOONER T. R. MERRITT A TOTAL LOSS.
Oswego, Sept. 12. -- The life-saving crew has just returned from the schooner ashore nine miles west of Oswego, having found that it was the Canadian schooner T. R. MERRITT. The MERRITT was bound from Hamilton to Oswego when struck by the storm. The anchors were let go, but the vessel dragged them in the heavy sea and was thrown high and dry on the beach. Her crew were able to step from the wrecked craft on to dry land without assistance. The crew consisted of six men and a woman cook. Capt. D. W. Corson reports that the vessel will probably be a total loss. The MERRITT was owned by Capt. Mckay, of Hamilton, and was valued at $5,800. She registerdd 328 tons and had rating of A 2, but carried no insurance.
The storm here was severe. The wind reached a velocity of 42 miles an hour and furious seas are rolling over the breakwater.
