J. C. Gilchrist was yesterday advised by his broker at Duluth to abandon the steamer V. SWAIN, to the underwriters. The vessel settled on a rock in 20 feet of water when she sank a few days ago and it is believed she has broken in two forward of the boiler house

J. C. Gilchrist yesterday afternoon abandoned the steamer V. SWAIN, sunk at Two Harbors, to the underwriters as a total loss. This course was advised by his Duluth broker.

      With three pumps working to keep her afloat the propeller V. SWAIN, which sank a few days ago at Two Harbors, was taken to the coal docks at Duluth yesterday to have her cargo of ore trimmed.

The steamer V. SWAIN of the Gilchrist fleet, which sank at Two Harbors last June, was released from drydock at Duluth yesterday after receiving repairs. She will not go into commission this season.
